Codicological and philological details determine their origin and dating. Most of the texts in the manuscripts have been identified for the first time. The question of vernacularization is examined through an analysis of the authors’, copyists,’ and compilers’ stated intentions. The theory of vertical stratification of languages for special purposes is introduced as a valid theoretical framework for explaining the coexistence of medical texts in Latin and in vernacular languages in the Middle Ages.
