Patristic Studies in East Asia (Mainly in Japan)

Focusing mainly on the situation in Japan, this paper presents a brief historical survey of patristic studies in East Asia, and touches upon various topics, such as Japanese educational institutions (especially universities) founded on principles which can be deemed Christian, major societies of scholars of Christian studies in Japan, and how patristic scholars in East Asia have become more and more involved in international activities related to patristic studies, beginning with the Oxford patristic conferences. Lastly, the possible significance of practicing patristic studies in Japan is briefly discussed. The appendix presents a list of past major projects for the translation of patristic texts into Japanese.
