The Epitoma rei militaris of Vegetius was a great success in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, with many manuscripts and repeated editions during the sixteenth century. Even a French translation, by Nicolas Volcyr de Sérouville of Lorraine, was printed by Chrestien Wechel. This translation shows both the interest of Renaissance readers in this work and their ways of reading it. In addition, translation techniques evolved alongside typographical ones. Not only do engravings complement and modernize the text, the use of the parenthesis is particularly interesting at a time when its function was not yet fixed.
