Vlach Status in Ottoman Croatia: Nahiye of Poljica in TD 174, Page 1 of 1

In late medieval period Poljica were a community of lesser nobility under Venetian suzerainty. Around 1497/8 the nobility split into pro-Ottoman and pro-Venetian party with two parallel hierarchies loyal to different suzerains. Defter data and Venetian sources from that year confirm that conclusion. Around 1514 the whole community accepted the Ottoman rule with occasional attempts to change sides again until 1540. The defter TD 174 from 1533 is the first defter that surveyed the whole community. But traces of previous turmoil were still traceable in the defter data.
