The circumstances surrounding the constitution and the first circulation of the oratory corpus of Gregory of Nazianzus are not well-known yet. The first surviving Greek manuscripts (ninth-tenth centuries) reveal a complex situation. Without answering all the questions, the careful examination of paratextual elements (, titles, stichometries, frontispieces) and of marginalia (e.g. scholia, marginal signs), nevertheless, makes it possible to shed some light on the history of the corpus and its dissemination. It is, thus, possible, for example, to isolate a particular group of witnesses, reflecting a lost Byzantine edition of the . The examination of this group of six manuscripts based on non-textual criteria is followed by the analysis of the variants of 16 in order to assess, as far as possible, the importance of these witnesses in the tradition.
