In what follows, the widespread idea of “Isidorian Renaissance” will be critically revised. The cultural floruit which marked Visigothic history in the 7th century had important roots already in the 6th century, i.e. in the time when Isidore himself was born, grew up and formed his own eruditio. For this development during the 6th century, the conflict between the Arian king Leovigild and the Catholic church played a decisive part and influenced the following era more than generally expected.
