Abstract

Auf einer erstmals 1956 veröffentlichten Grabinschrift des 2. Jh.s n. Chr. aus Tomi, von der bisher nur eine Nachzeichnung existierte, gab die Buchstabenfolge OVI/Anlaß zur Ergänzung OVI-/[DIA, und Spekulationen, daß es sich bei dem mit neun Jahren verstorbenen Mädchen um die Nachkomme eines oder einer Freigelassenen des Dichters P. Ovidius Naso handle, der (angeblich) 17 n. Chr. in Tomi in der Verbannung gestorben war, wurden mehrfach geäußert. Aufgrund der erstmals gemachten und mir zur Verfügung gestellten Fotografien des Steins und der Autopsie durch Frau Dr. Cristina-Georgeta Alexandrescu (Bukarest) ergab sich jedoch, daß auf dem Stein noch zwei weitere Buchstaben lesbar sind, die von den früheren Herausgebern übersehen wurden, so daß sich die Ergänzung OVI-/[DIA nicht mehr halten läßt. Entsprechend wird ein neuer Vorschlag zur Lesung der Inschrift gemacht und versucht, ihr noch weitere Aussagen abzugewinnen.

Abstract

On a sepulchral inscription from Tomis dating from the second century ce that so far has been published only in the form of a drawing, the letters OVI/were supplemented by the previous editors to OVI-/[DIA and there were speculations that the girl who had died at the age of nine was the descendant of a freedman or freedwoman of the poet P. Ovidius Naso, who (allegedly) had died in exile in Tomis in 17 . With the help of the first photographs that had been put at my disposal and an autopsy of the stone by Dr. Cristina-Georgeta Alexandrescu (Bukarest), it turned out that on the margin of the stone two more letters that had escaped the notice of the previous editors are legible, so that the supplement OVI-/[DIA is no longer possible. On the basis of this discovery, a new proposal for the reading and an attempt at a closer interpretation of the inscription are made.
