Abstract

Abstract

Text linguistics according to the model of H. Weinrich has been applied to Biblical Hebrew by A. Niccacci. The present article, a summary of a broader work, aims to apply this theory to the Latin tense system of the Vulgate. As a sample text, the narrative sections of Gen 37-50 are studied. The comparison with the Masoretic Text shows a wide text-linguistic correspondence regarding the main line of the narration. A certain correspondence is found as well for the background. For the antecedent/prelude constructions, however, the Vulgate corresponds to a minor degree. This is caused by the fact that Latin does not exhibit verbal tenses, which are text-linguistically equivalent to some constructions peculiar to Biblical Hebrew.
