Rouvrir le passé. Note sur l’histoire de la mémoire comme archéologie disciplinaire

Cet article tente de cerner les principaux enjeux d’une histoire de la mémoire littéraire au xix^e siècle. À l’encontre d’une conception passive et purement descriptive des études de réception, il invite à se concentrer sur la restructuration des catégories mêmes de la mémorisation culturelle à partir du xix^e siècle. Dans son sens moderne, la « littérature » représente une de ces nouvelles catégories. Il paraît dès lors opportun de tenir ensemble un fil disciplinaire (comment se constitue la notion moderne de littérature en France ?) et un fil à la fois historiographique et mémoriel (comment se souvient-on des productions héritées ?). Dans ces conditions, l’histoire de la mémoire littéraire pourrait, à l’avenir, jouer un rôle de premier plan dans la nécessaire généalogie critique de l’idéologie littéraire nationale.

This article analyses what is at stake in the field of the literary reception studies when it focuses on nineteenth century France. Against a static conception of reception issues, it proposes to pay more attention to the structural changes of the post-revolutionary cultural memory. What we call “literature” in the contemporary meaning of the term can typically be regarded as a new cultural category. Therefore it seems indispensable to keep two different kinds of investigations strictly connected; on the one hand, a semantic history of disciplines (separation between humanities and sciences); and on the other hand, a methodical analysis of the modern ways of cultural memorization. On that condition the history of literary memory can possibly play an important part in the critical genealogy of the French literary ideology.
