Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The(Tosa diary) was written by one of the leading poets of ancient Japan, Kino Tsurayuki (872-945), and it records a journey undertaken by him in 935. The holograph survived at least until the late fifteenth century but can now only be approached through a number of copies made of it from the thirteenth onwards. In 1941 Professor Ikeda Kikan published the results of his attempt to reconstruct the holograph, and the text as he reconstructed it has remained the standard text ; later discoveries have vindicated his methodology and have shown his judgments to have been correct. Thus his work has stood the test of time. This article explores his methodology as a textual scholar, its origins in European textual scholarship of the early twentieth century, and his belief that European textual methodologies were of universal validity.
