The Greek Pentateuch and the Scholarly Milieu of Alexandria

The origins of the first translation of the Bible, the Greek Pentateuch, in the first part of the third century BCE, is still an enigma. Ancient and new theories try to explain this phenomenon without precedents in Antiquity. The author, after years of dedication to the study of the Septuagint and Hellenistic Judaism, proposes his own view of this particular issue. He call for a critical return to the narrative of the Letter of Aristeas inasmuch as it rightly describes the atmosphere of the Ptolemaic court and the scholarly milieu of the Library of Alexandria. The translators were cultivated Jews, bilingual intellectuals, expert in both Hebrew and Greek language and literature and in both religious traditions. It cannot be decided whether they were Alexandrian or they came from the circle of the Jerusalem temple in a period when Palestine was under Ptolemaic rule and the relations between Jerusalem and Alexandria were very easy-going.

Les origines de la première traduction de la Bible — le Pentateuque grec — dans la première moitié du iii^e siècle avant l’ère chrétienne, restent encore une énigme. Anciennes et nouvelles théories cherchent à expliquer ce phénomène sans précédent dans l’Antiquité. L’auteur, après des années dédiées à l’étude de la Septante et du judaïsme hellénistique, propose son point de vue sur ce sujet précis. Il estime nécessaire de retourner, avec un regard critique, à la narration de la Lettre d’Aristée qui décrit de façon minutieuse l’atmosphère à la cour des Ptolomées et le milieu académique de la bibliothèque d’Alexandrie. Les traducteurs étaient des Juifs cultivés, des intellectuels bilingues, familiarisés avec la langue et la littérature hébraïque et grecque, ainsi qu’avec les deux traditions religieuses. Il est difficile de décider s’il s’agissait de savants alexandrins ou si les auteurs de cette première traduction faisaient partie du cercle du temple de Jérusalem, à une époque où la Palestine se trouvait sous la domination des Ptolomées et où les rapports entre Jérusalem et Alexandrie étaient très étroits.
