Abstract

Abstract

This article examines a unique clay object that came from the site of Apollonia-Arsuf (Israel), which we tend to consider was used as a horizontal (flat) portable sundial (horologium). The object is somewhat pentagonal in shape, depicting a design that was incised (and partially stamped) on it prior to firing. Thus it may add to our knowledge of daily time division in Late Byzantine Palestine.
