Preview this chapter:

The excerpt , on purgative drugs, is attributed to Hippocrates in the Greek manuscripts, and to Galen in some manuscripts transmitting its first medieval Latin translation. The present article is concerned with this translation, which was already published by Hermann Schöne (1920) and Marie-Laure Monfort (2000) on the basis of ancient printed editions. The aim is (i) to show that was first translated into Latin in the thirteenth century, probably at the court of Manfred, King of Sicily, between 1258 and 1266, and that the author was Bartholomew of Messina or a collaborator of his. These conclusions are based on style, tradition and reception; (ii) to provide a critical edition based on three mutually independent manuscripts of the first half of the fourteenth century (Rome, BA, 1338; Vienna, ÖNB, 2328; Paris, BNF, lat. 6865). The edition is accompanied by two indices (Greek- Latin and Latin-Greek).
