The Rhyton-Bearer from the Velestino Hoard, Page 1 of 1

Analyzed within the article is a metal plaque that depicts a man holding a drinking horn i.e. rhyton, found as part of the famous early medieval hoard discovered near Velestino in Thessaly (7th-8th century CE). The initial description of the plaque is followed by a comparative analysis of its iconography, in terms of similar medieval specimens, but also in more general transcultural and diachronic frames. The article ends by presenting two possible interpretative concepts regarding the meaning of the object and its iconography.
