If marriage doesn’t represent a subject of predilection for philosophers of the Latin Republic, it is honoured by imperial stoicism, especially by Seneca, and above all by Musonius Rufus, who composed several dissertations in Greek on marriage. In these conditions, it will be necessary to question the causes, nature and significance of this evolution within Roman philosophy and to consider the connection between doctrinal base, roman heritage and personal orientations. This article will therefore propose to clarify and compare the different philosophical conceptions of marriage, in order to identify precisely the points of convergence and theoretical differences between schools. This first step will highlight the role played by the Stoic Philosophers in the theorization of marriage and in the emergence of a new conception of conjugal ties.
