The article is about the representation of marriage in the rhetoric of the imperial era. The theme of marriage is subject to discussions focusing on traditional visions, idealized by exempla referring to the time of the Republic, and conditioned by commonplaces. However, the school exercises proposed to students reflect contemporary concerns and the evolution of the legislation. Declamations get to think about the rights and obligations of various family members (husband, wife, father, mother, son, daughter), as well as about their role and function in society. Through the theme of marriage, they address issues as important as the duty of obedience, gratitude, procreation, and perpetuation of the family and the State.
