The reader will find many Roman law terms concerning women and marriage in the studies included in this collection. Sometimes they are used in a strictly technical sense, some others only in a generic one. The aim of this glossary is to clarify significant recurring terms and concepts especially from a legal point of view. The six alphabetically ordered entries (ciuis, femina, lex Iulia et Papia Poppaea and lex Iulia de adulteriis, lex Voconia, matrimonium, mulier) have been chosen not only for their relevance to the volume’s topic, but most of all because they allow to sketch a broad outline of the female condition within the family and the role assigned to women in Roman society.
