Hogarth, ‘Hudibras Visiting Sidrophel’: Hudibras and Ralpho visit the astrologer Sidrophel, attended by his servant Whachum, etching and engraving, c. 1721.
The scene is set in a laboratory, a stuffed crocodile and bat hang from the ceiling and wall, on the floor there are a globe, books — one of which is about palmistry — and scientific instruments. An astrological chart is on the table. The plate has the number 11 in lower left-hand corner and in the right corner is written ‘W: Hogarth Invt: et sc[ulpsit]’. This is the eleventh of the seventeen plates (a frontispiece and sixteen illustrations) of Hudibras designed by Hogarth c. 1721 and published in 1726, after the success of the series of twelve larger plates issued in that year.
