Figure 8. Hogarth, ‘Hudibras Visiting Sidrophel’: Hudibras and Ralpho visit the astrologer Sidrophel, attended by his servant Whachum, etching and engraving, . 1721. The scene is set in a laboratory, a stuffed crocodile and bat hang from the ceiling and wall, on the floor there are a globe, books — one of which is about palmistry — and scientific instruments. An astrological chart is on the table. The plate has the number 11 in lower left-hand corner and in the right corner is written ‘W: Hogarth Invt: et sc[ulpsit]’. This is the eleventh of the seventeen plates (a frontispiece and sixteen illustrations) of designed by Hogarth . 1721 and published in 1726, after the success of the series of twelve larger plates issued in that year.
