This study aims to provide an analysis of the language of the anonymous poem of the Heptateuchos (a biblical paraphrase of the Old Testament composed around the fifth century ad), presenting some significant examples among its various lexical peculiarities and differences in use compared to classical Latin. The language of this work is analysed, in particular, under the aspect of the creation of neologisms, which are introduced for the first time by the anonymous paraphrast under the influence of the Greek language. Following this perspective, the paper focuses above all on the terms anus = μαῖα (‘midwife’) and odium (‘bad smell’).
