Franciscan Scholars in Bartholomew of Pisa ’s

This study examines Franciscan scholars and their works in Bartholomew of Pisa’s . Bartholomew identifes the scholars as Francis’s ‘apostles’ who, like Jesus’ apostles, are sent into the world with the deeper understanding of the Good News. This contribution looks at the way Bartholomew presents these scholars as important to the missionary outreach of the friars. Special note is taken of Bonaventure of Bagnoregio and John Duns Scotus as among the intellectual lights who deepen the tradition by expanding the theological and philosophical framing of Franciscan spiritual life and message.
