Fraternal organizations used the lantern as a teaching tool, as did the Catholic Church. Both aimed at bringing their audiences to a higher spiritual state through lantern lectures. This paper compares the strategies that were used to achieve their respective goals. It also examines the role played by the composition of the images and the choice of topics for the illustrations.
