When he was nominated for the position of general engraver, Augustin Dupre became responsible for providing all of the tools that were required to produce the new coinage created by the introduction of the franc in 1795. This was a time period that saw significant change, both from a technological point of view as well as in terms of numismatics. Study of the archives allows us to see how technology evolved, with the tools providing key evidence, as well as how such changes enhanced the efficiency and safety of production methods.
