This contribution sheds light on a group of sulphur casts of ancient Roman medallions used by Francesco Gnecchi as a source for his work (1912). The Italian numismatist assumed that all of these casts reproduced specimens kept in the Vatican collection before 1798. A comparison with a similar set of casts and its accompanying manuscript catalogue, recently made available for study, shows that the ones viewed by Gnecchi also reproduced pieces from several other collections and were made by the Roman antiquary Filippo Aurelio Visconti at the beginning of the nineteenth century.
