This article sheds light on the beginnings of the German coin and medal trade, as well as the medal collection of Elector Wilhelm I of Hesse-Kassel (1743–1821). Wilhelm was among the wealthiest European princes of his time and built up his collection with the help of Meyer Amschel Rothschild, the founder of the international banking house. Parts of Wilhelm’s outstanding collection are now in the Museum August Kestner in Hanover. Rare significant pieces can be identified in the museum’s holdings and are gradually being published online.
