Abstract

In 1867 William James met a German professor without picking up his name. Rumor has it that it was Wilhelm Dilthey. The editors of James’ elucidate the professor’s identity with infelicitous statements that are prone to make that declaration dubious. It is shown that the identification is nonetheless valid.
