Abstract

The theme of death accompanied the monastic reflection through the centuries and it has been the subject of punctual reflections also including by the most recent historiography. For each life the death is a moment of crucial and terrible step, joyful and desired in the christian and cenobitic perspective. Inside the monasteries it was the focus of a rituality rich of symbols and of gestures full of hope in eternal life, actions which do not have mitigated the human fears and the uncertainties in front of the end of life, feelings that in different ways and forms are documented attestations in the sources.
