Abstract

Abstract

This article explores the theoretical and methodological challenges of reconstructing the pace of events and activities, which shaped urban archaeological contexts. It argues that the archaeological context and its stratigraphic relations should be the primary unit of inquiry, as it contains a wealth of heterogeneous data, which require multifaceted investigation. Increasingly, this material is being divided and studied by different specialists from the archaeological sciences. This major development does not diminish the contribution of the artefactual material in understanding the nature of the activities performed by past individuals, in time and space. Through a detailed source-critical analysis of artefacts and their depositional context, this article seeks to highlight the contribution of objects in tracing past events and proposes a short biography of a glass-bead workshop from the beginning of the eighth century excavated in 1985–1986 at the emporium of Ribe, Denmark.
