Abstract

In the Masoretic (Tiberian) tradition, there are some forms in which the accentuation expresses a semantical or functional differentiation (e.g. ). This paper describes another group of such forms, the forms without endings. These forms are mostly , however some verbs are always , and some have both accentuations. The paper aims to give an explanation for these different accentuations. In my opinion, there is not a phonetic explanation for this. There seems to be a connection to the meaning: the active verbs prefer the accentuation. On the other hand, there might be an influence for the forms from other passive forms, especially in . Diachronically there might be a connection with the different vocalization patterns of the accadic N-stem. Some forms might be vestiges of Gt-formations.
