Abstract

Abstract

In the NT, as in the works of the Greek authors, there are two main uses of καί: connective (copulative conjunction) and adjunctive (adverbial particle); both however denote various nuances. As an adverb, καί assumes two general meanings: additive (“also”) and ascensive or intensive (“even”); sometimes, when the sense of climax is particularly strong, the last one bears an emphatic sense. The present article focuses attention on the function of the adverbial καί in the writings of Luke. All the passages which contain the adverbial καί are grouped and analized in three sections according to the use of this particle: 1) in connection with single elements of the clause or parts of the sentence; 2) in relation between the clauses, where καί denotes the addition of the content to that of the preceeding clause, main or coordinate; 3) within the various forms of comparison. The aim of this study is to obtain a better insight into the Lukan uses of the adverbial καί and to appreciate them in Biblical exegesis and translation.
