The article aims to provide an overview of the Jerusalem urban growth and development between the 4th and 7th centuries, based on archaeological and textual evidence. It will deal with the transformations that the city of Jerusalem experienced during the Byzantine period: its expansion beyond the city wall, the population of the Roman suburban areas to the south (Mt. Zion and the Ophel) and Byzantine suburban areas to the north and to the west, the characterization of some areas in an ethnic or functional category.
