In Late medieval and Renaissance Italy the book played a significant role, yet studies on literacy have tended to pay scant attention to the libraries that belonged to women. In this essay I will offer a first survey on books and libraries of certain Italian noblewomen including Lucrezia Tornabuoni (1427-1482), Ippolita Maria Sforza Visconti (1445-1484) Eleonora d’Aragona (1450-1493), and Isabella d’Este (1474-1539).
