Pacification and Reconciliation in the Spanish Habsburg Worlds
This is the first volume to analyze pacification strategies within the Spanish Monarchy on a global level. It deals with the development and aftermath of the many early modern revolts on the Iberian and Italian Peninsula the Sicilian and Sardinian islands the cities along the North Sea and the Spanish Americas. These comparative studies uncover the different ways in which the Spanish Monarchy dealt with rebellion from cities and constituencies ranging from military responses and repression to offers for negotiation and reconciliation. They also point out common characteristics of these pacification processes such as the promises of pardon the granting of grace and the instruction of peace envoys. The different chapters each accompanied by an edition of sources show how the reconciliation and reincorporation into the Spanish Habsburg orbit proved to be a painstaking process with an unpredictable outcome.

La prêtrise aztèque constitue une thématique de recherche à la fois inédite et d’une grande richesse. Quelles étaient les caractéristiques de la fonction sacerdotale au Mexique ancien ? Qui étaient les hommes et les femmes qui journellement comme en des circonstances plus exceptionnelles prenaient soin des divinités et veillaient au bon accomplissement des rites ? Quels étaient les modèles mythiques des prêtres mésoaméricains ? Quels étaient leurs rapports avec Quetzalcoatl et Tlaloc les deux divinités dont ils étaient présentés comme proches ?
C’est un regard neuf qui à travers ces questions se porte ici sur les religions mésoaméricaines étudiées dans leurs aspects pratiques et quotidiens et non pas uniquement au moyen de concepts abstraits ou par le biais des rites les plus spectaculaires – à l’instar de ce qui fut l’une des seules images véhiculées en Europe depuis le xvi e siècle celle du prêtre arrachant le cœur encore palpitant d’une victime sacrificielle.
Cet ouvrage richement illustré se situe à la croisée de l’iconologie de l’histoire et de l’anthropologie des religions tout en intégrant des éléments de philologie et d’archéologie. Il propose une réflexion résolument contemporaine sur la méthodologie à mettre en œuvre pour aborder la documentation relative aux cultures mésoaméricaines préhispaniques et mieux comprendre le processus d’élaboration des sources du xvi e siècle.
Theatres of Belief: Music and Conversion in the Early Modern City
These eleven essays all centrally concerned with the intimate relationship between sound religion and society in the early modern world present a sequence of test cases located in a wide variety of urban environments in Europe and the Americas. Written by an international cast of acclaimed historians and musicologists they explore in depth the interrelated notions of conversion and confessionalisation in the shared belief that the early modern city was neither socially static nor religiously uniform. Scholastica Colonialis: Reception and Development of Baroque Scholasticism in Latin America, 16th-18th Centuries
This volume is a collection of studies on Latin American scholasticism originally presented at the Fourth International Conference of Medieval Philosophy at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS) Porto Alegre Brazil November 12-14 2012. These essays provide a significant overview of authors works and areas of interest associated to scholastic thought in the 16th-18th centuries focusing particularly on Latin American or European-born authors whose philosophical and theological careers were significantly set in Latin American soil and due to their education reveal a profound acquaintance with European philosophical theories and problems. The reception and development of Medieval thought in Baroque scholasticism the connections between European philosophy mainly Iberian scholasticism and philosophical-theological debates in the «New World» and the revisiting by Latin American scholars of Medieval schools of thought and theoretical patterns taught in Europe prompted by the encounter with several peoples living in the new continent and the search and justification for models of colonization are some of the relevant issues discussed in here. The studies collected in this volume place colonial scholasticism in the history of ideas by letting authors and their writings speak for themselves.

Les congrégations françaises dans le monde après les lois laïques de 1901 et 1904
Juillet 1901 - juillet 1904 : deux lois de la République laïque portent des coups sévères aux congrégations religieuses qui sont soit dissoutes soit interdites d’enseignement. Des milliers de leurs membres choissent l’exil aux portes de la France mais aussi aux quatre coins du monde avec un attrait particulier pour le Canada l’Amérique centrale le Brésil la Méditerranée orientale. Sur place le refuge tend à se fondre dans la mission. C’est cette page oubliée mais planétaire de l’histoire de l’Église et de la France que ce volume donne à lire.
