In recent years, our knowledge of the Arsacid Empire has significantly improved since new sources have been made available and a serious discussion regarding the traditional Greco-Roman ones has put into doubt established convictions. However, the richness of findings from later periods of Dura and the fact that most scholars working on the site are more acquainted with the classical world than the ancient Iranian one have somehow overshadowed the relevance of the Parthian Empire in the history of the town. Recent research proposals have put into doubt the length and effectiveness of Arsacid rule over the city, in particular for the first century bce and the decades between Trajan’s and Lucius Verus’s Parthian Wars. The aim of this paper is to restore the balance by introducing to the discussion the results achieved by recent research on Arsacid history and policy.
