This paper examines the history of cultural heritage destruction and looting, and addresses the legal tools aimed at protecting against these acts, including international conventions and national laws. It also provides a number of case studies involving sovereign claims for the return of stolen (or allegedly stolen) artefacts, while considering the inherent challenges or pursuing the return of stolen heritage. Finally, the paper addresses the current destruction (done in part by terrorist organizations) and rampant looting (at least partly fuelled by the international art market) occurring in the Middle East, with a particular focus on Dura-Europos.
