Aims and Scope
Centaurus publishes high-quality, double-blind peer reviewed scholarly work on the history of science in its broadest sense, including the history of mathematics, medicine, biomedical sciences, earth sciences, humanities, social sciences, and technology. It welcomes contributions that address epistemological questions as well as contributions covering the social, economic, cultural, political, material and organisational dimensions of science in the past. The journal encourage submissions that connect history of science to other historical fields and disciplines.
Submissions
Submissions covering all time periods—from Antiquity to contemporary history—and all geographical areas are accepted. Submissions with a global, transnational, and comparative perspective are particularly encouraged. Centaurus publishes a wide variety of formats, including research articles, historiographical articles, special issues, short papers on topics of current interest and articles open to peer review commentary. In addition, the editorial board commissions experts to write book reviews, book notices, review essays and reflections on the future of the field.
Publication Programme
The editorial board and the author community strive for a timely and regular publication rhythm. The temporary backlog is currently being cleared at an accelerated pace. Issues 66/1-2 and 66/3 are already available online (print version to follow), while issues 66/4 will be published before the end of 2025. Issues 67/1 and 67/2 are in preparation to be published in January 2026.
Subscribe to Open
Centaurus is Diamond Open Access: its content is freely accessible without any cost to readers or authors through a partnership between the ESHS and Brepols. Rather than relying on Article Processing Charges (APCs), like most Open Access journals, Centaurus is first and foremost funded through subscriptions from libraries and other institutions under the Subscribe-to-Open model. This model offers a more equitable and sustainable alternative to the Gold Open Access model based on APCs, as it is supported by the community of history of science scholars and mobilises resources to make scholarly content broadly accessible and visible. Centaurus’ Diamond Open Access status is, however, not guaranteed. Only when a sufficient number of libraries and institutions continuously subscribe, can it remain Diamond Open Access. Therefore, we kindly invite you to contact your librarian, requesting them to subscribe to Centaurus.
