Continuing her previous text on writing and filming through the body, Ira A. Goryainova explores the dynamic between the politics of the gaze and the power of the image. In proposing to consider the gaze as a border experience, she tries to grope and comprehend that border. In this auto-fictional essay, she turns herself into an object and revisits some of the seminal theoretical works, weaving a fabric in which transgressive behaviour, eugenics, medical imaging and Western art history intertwine with her own practice.

In het verlengde van haar eerdere tekst over schrijven en filmen via het lichaam, onderzoekt Ira A. Goryainova de dynamiek tussen de politiek van de blik en de macht van het beeld. Ze stelt voor om de blik te beschouwen als een grenservaring en probeert die grens te betasten en te begrijpen. In dit autofictionele essay verandert ze zichzelf in een object en herbekijkt ze enkele van de belangrijkste theoretische werken, waarbij ze een weefsel spint waarin transgressief gedrag, eugenetica, medische beeldvorming en de westerse kunstgeschiedenis verweven zijn met haar eigen praktijk.

This contribution explores the aesthetic nature of play from the player's perspective, examining the “power of maddening” inherent in play states. It delves into the emotional fabric of play while investigating the traces of responsibility embedded in predesigned structures.

Deze bijdrage onderzoekt de esthetische aard van spel vanuit het perspectief van de speler en analyseert de ‘kracht van gekte’ die inherent is aan speelsituaties. Het verdiept zich in de emotionele structuur van spel en onderzoekt de sporen van verantwoordelijkheid die zijn verweven in vooraf ontworpen structuren.

This is a fictional story that questions the traditional interweaving of technoscience. It goes through the fibres to un-weave or un-make the essentialist borders created between humans and machines. We use weaving as a thread that helps us to rethink the distance between the three components of HCI: humans, computers, and interaction. We tell the story of weavers, looms, and threads assembling as an accord that is not an interaction but an intra-action. The text itself shapes the argument and introduces the reader to the creature.

Dit is een fictief verhaal dat de traditionele verwevenheid van technowetenschap in twijfel trekt. Het gaat door de vezels heen om de essentialistische grenzen tussen mens en machine te ontweven of te ontwarren. We gebruiken het weven als een rode draad die ons helpt om de afstand tussen de drie componenten van HCI te heroverwegen: mensen, computers en interactie. We vertellen het verhaal van wevers, weefgetouwen en draden die samenkomen als een akkoord dat geen interactie, maar een intra-actie is. De tekst zelf geeft vorm aan het argument en laat de lezer kennismaken met 'het wezen'.

This contribution presents the experience of the Future Shock Orchestra, an interfaculty laboratory on instrument invention and augmentation developed collaboratively by the Royal Conservatoire Antwerp and the Design Faculty of the University of Antwerp. Designed by a diverse team of tutors for bachelor’s and master’s students from both institutions, the project aims to reflect on and challenge our understanding of instrumentality from technological and aesthetic perspectives rooted in the present day.

Deze bijdrage presenteert de ervaring van het Future Shock Orchestra, een interfacultair laboratorium gericht op instrumentuitvinding en -verruiming, ontwikkeld in samenwerking tussen het Koninklijk Conservatorium Antwerpen en de Faculteit Ontwerpwetenschappen van de Universiteit Antwerpen. Ontworpen door een divers team van docenten voor bachelor- en masterstudenten van beide instellingen, heeft het project als doel om onze opvattingen over instrumentaliteit te reflecteren en uit te dagen vanuit zowel technologische als esthetische perspectieven die geworteld zijn in de huidige tijd.

Global chains of capital production have displaced and destroyed innumerable nonhuman and human beings worldwide. We address this complexity with an artistic research tapestry titled Night Journey that represents travelling mountains in conversation with a separate Mughal tapestry. Through Night Journey and this paper, we reflect on the relational consequences of globalization from an Indigenous ontological perspective. This is also considered from a methodology rooted in our migrant positionality.

Mondiale waardeketens hebben ontelbare niet-menselijke en menselijke wezens wereldwijd ontheemd en vernietigd. We benaderen deze complexiteit met een artistiek onderzoekstapijt getiteld Night Journey, dat reizende bergen voorstelt in gesprek met een apart Mughal-tapijt. Door middel van Night Journey en dit artikel reflecteren we op de relationele gevolgen van globalisering vanuit een Inheems ontologisch perspectief. Dit wordt ook beschouwd vanuit een methodologie die geworteld is in onze positionaliteit als migranten.

This paper investigates the political dimensions of visual language in architectural representation through Participatory Action Research (PAR). It critiques traditional architectural visuals, which often exclude non-expert stakeholders, leading to decisions driven by superficial appeal. The study advocates for alternative forms of representation, including subjective mapping, to enhance communication and inclusivity in design processes. Focusing on Antwerp's “Ten Eekhove” neighbourhood, the research challenges traditional representations, emphasizing accessible visual languages that empower marginalized communities and promote equitable urban development.

Dit artikel onderzoekt de politieke aspecten van architectonische visuele taal via participatief actie-onderzoek. Traditionele architectonische beeldvorming sluit vaak niet-experten uit, wat leidt tot onverwachte uitkomsten die gebaseerd zijn op oppervlakkige esthetiek. De studie pleit voor alternatieve representaties, zoals subjectieve kaarten, om communicatie en inclusiviteit in het ontwerpproces te verbeteren. Met een focus op de Antwerpse wijk "Ten Eekhove" daagt het onderzoek traditionele weergaven uit en benadrukt het toegankelijke visuele talen die onderdrukte gemeenschappen versterken en een eerlijke stedelijke ontwikkeling bevorderen.
