Giovan Battista Strozzi the Elder’s madrigals, organised in thematic series, were very succesful in sixteenth century Florence. They were imitated by Michelangelo Serafini, and after his death by Strozzi the Younger and many other poets coming from the ranks of the Florentine aristocracy and belonging to the Accademia degli Alterati: Antonio Buonaguidi, Piero and Nero del Nero, Giovanni de’ Bardi, Giulio del Bene, Alessandro Canigiani, Palla Rucellai, Bernardino Antinori, Pier Capponi, Mario Colonna, etc. Through a multidisciplinary approach (ranging from lexical and stylistical analysis to a cultural comparison with the visual arts), this paper aims at definining the series of madrigals as a ‘Grand Ducal’ genre, showing how they share similar structures, themes and lexicon; how they relate to the aesthetics of the art of Pietre Dure; and how they interact with the ideals of Grand Duke Francisco I's artistic enterprises, i.e. the Studiolo and the villa and gardens of Pratolino.
