Early Byzantine Fortifications in the Eastern Adriatic: State of the Research, Page 1 of 1

By discussing the existing scholarly literature as well as analysing the available evidence the paper aims at deconstructing the theory still pervading the Croatian scholarship about the so-called limes maritimus, which has been devised to describe what is seen as an elaborate network of maritime strongholds along the coast and on the islands of the Eastern Adriatic created in the Justinianic Age. The intention is to offer fresh insights and dispel with the theory as a reductive historiographic construct in an attempt to open the Croatian scholarship entrenched in the prevailing Justinian I's limes paradigm to new avenues of thoughts concerning the general militarisation of landscape in the Eastern Adriatic during Late Antiquity.
