Preview this chapter:

Biskupija-Crkvina has been widely recognised as a trademark of the early Middle Ages in Dalmatia. The discovery of the monumental three-aisled basilica and furnished graves pinpointed the site on the map of early medieval Europe. The interred have usually been seen as male members of the rising Croatian elite who subjugated former Byzantine lands on behalf of Charlemagne and his heirs. Although the cemetery and the church reflect certain processes mentioned in the historical record, correlations between the social organisation and burials can potentially reveal much more. This paper explores the background of the founding of the cemetery, the traits of the burial rite and their entanglement with one of the earliest pre-Romanesque churches in the Dalmatian hinterland.
