The verbs meter and poner have functioned as near-synonyms in the Romance languages since their earliest documentations up to the present day. However, in archaic and classical Latin, mitto and pono had clearly differentiated semantic values: while the former could be translated by the verb ‘to send’, the latter had the sense of ‘to put, place or arrange something in a certain place’. In this paper, we seek to identify the specific contexts in which Latin mitto began to assume features of pono. As we will see, the verbs depono and demitto in Columella’s technical language were essential in this journey, as they facilitated the neutralization of the differential values of the two verbs and made possible the generalization of the sense of placement in mitto.
