The eighteenth century was a time of the introduction in Europe of the award or prize medal, used not only as a gift or token of gratitude to commemorate contributions made by individuals or institutions, according to a centuries-long tradition, but also as a special type of universal medal. Stanislaus Augustus, like many other rulers of the Enlightened Age, introduced this type of medal as the most prized royal reward offered to his subjects, mostly from the noble classes, as well as to foreigners. The article discusses in brief the types of prize or award medals produced during the reign of Poland’s last king.
