Coins found in the ground are authentic witnesses to the historical circulation of money and an important source for historical, economic, and political events, especially of those epochs from which only a few written records have survived. In the ‘Rares-Bares’ project, the medieval and modern coin finds in Saxony-Anhalt, which are currently in the State Office for Heritage Management and Archaeology Saxony-Anhalt and the Saxony-Anhalt State Coin Cabinet, are to be digitally recorded. To capture these images, a process has been developed in cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institute for Factory Operation and Automation that allows coins to be described and identified uniquely and unmistakably on the basis of an individual ‘digital fingerprint’.
