The production and spread of coin counterfeits is a problem with global dimensions, one with severe legal, economic, and scientific consequences. These objects are actively polluting the historical environment, causing both distortions of the historical reconstructions and a scholarly over-precaution, depriving research of unique and hence important originals. Forgeries affect the market of cultural valuables by infiltrating various collections. Currently, there is no precise information concerning the extent to which the ‘products’ of coin counterfeiters have spread worldwide. The digital era presents new opportunities for the further spread of counterfeit objects, but also for the more effective prevention of the forgery of cultural heritage. Hence, it is of crucial importance to initiate an intensive scientific discussion on the topic, offering concepts and innovative solutions to this pressing issue.
