oa I reperti numismatici dagli scavi di Dibsi Faraj, Siria Settentrionale (1971–1974)

Preview this chapter:

In the early 1970s, rescue excavations, funded by the Dumbarton Oaks Center for Byzantine Studies together with Kelsey Museum of Archaeology at the University of Michigan, were conducted in Dibsi Faraj (Syria). Neither the excavations nor the materials recovered, including 1676 coins, were published at the time, with only preliminary reports appearing. The archive of the excavations is currently preserved at the Department of Archaeology, Durham University.

The director of this research, the late Richard Harper, catalogued all of the Roman and Byzantine coins in a preliminary form during his post-excavation work. Regarding the Islamic coins, he sought the collaboration of two experts in Islamic antiquities, Priscilla Soucek and Muhammad El-Kholi.

Given the impossibility of viewing the coins, as their location is currently still unknown, Harper’s hand-written forms, together with Soucek and El-Kholi’s preliminary reports, are the cornerstone of my reassessment of the numismatic materials, carried out in the framework of the publication project of the Dibsi Faraj excavations, coordinated by Anna Leone.

Based on this study, a synthesis of the monetary circulation in Dibsi Faraj from ancient to modern periods is presented here.
