Comment dire un ordre du monde essentiellement caché ? Cet article vise à montrer qu’Augustin affronte ce paradoxe en déployant quatre types de discours, que nous avons successivement analysés : analogique, apophatique, métaphorique et mimétique. Ces discours, qui peuvent être combinés les uns aux autres, expriment avec une intensité variable la dimension cachée de l’ordre. Ainsi, l’usage rhétorique des images est réinvesti selon l’idée d’un monde-discours, produit du Verbe divin, qui se laisse décrypter à l’instar du texte biblique. En outre, chaque discours reflète également une représentation de Dieu.

How can we talk about an essentially hidden world order? This paper attempts to show that Augustine confronts this paradox using four types of discourse, each of which will be analysed: analogical, apophatic, metaphorical and mimetic. These discourses, which may be combined with one another, express, more or less, the hidden nature of order. In this way, the rhetorical use of images follows the idea that the world is a discourse, a product of the divine Word, which can be interpreted just like biblical texts. Furthermore, each discourse corresponds to a particular representation of God.
