f « Dieu » ou « démon » de Socrate ? Augustin contre Apulée

Cette étude est consacrée à la polémique d’Augustin contre Apulée au sujet du démon de Socrate. Dans un premier temps, nous examinons le texte augustinien pour mettre en lumière le but, la stratégie, et les enjeux philosophiques de cette polémique, ainsi que sa spécificité et ses limites : la question qu’Augustin se pose sur la nature du démon socratique ; le lien qu’il établit entre les démons et le théâtre et qu’il fait remonter à Platon ; la distinction entre dieu et démon qu’il attribue à Apulée. Nous traitons ensuite le problème de la médiation entre le divin et l’humain, dans les perspectives chrétienne et platonicienne, en expliquant pourquoi, chez Augustin, le Christ remplace les démons en tant que seul et véritable Médiateur. Nous montrons enfin qu’Augustin dissocie Socrate des philosophes platoniciens en lui attribuant une doctrine monothéiste, et nous nous interrogeons sur la pensée socratique elle-même.

This study focuses on Augustine’s polemic against Apuleius about Socrates’ daemon. At first it examines the Augustinian text in order to clarify the goal, strategy and philosophical implications of this polemic, as well as its specificity and limits: the question raised by Augustine about the nature of the Socratic daemon; the link he establishes between daemons and theatre, which, according to him, goes back to Plato; the distinction between god and daemon that he ascribes to Apuleius. Afterwards the study treats the problem of the mediation between the divine and the human from both Christian and Platonic perspectives, explaining why, in Augustine’s thought, Jesus Christ replaces the daemons as the only true Mediator. Finally it shows that Augustine separates Socrates from Platonic philosophers by attributing to him a monotheistic doctrine, and it inquires about the Socratic thought itself.
