The owner, the overseer of the residence and overseer of the great mansion Ankhemthenenet-Inkhi, is not recorded elsewhere. Notwithstanding, because of the rarity of his names, he can be identified with two officials attested in different graffiti at Wadi Hammamat. This identification, and the string of titles carved on the block provide data for proposing the way he was promoted in the Egyptian administration.

The Egyptian Royal Titularies of the Roman Emperors: A Local Version of the Imitatio Alexandri?

In this respect, it is possible to establish a number of connections with the Ptolemies, as well as notable links with Alexander the Great. This paper aims to analyse all of these borrowings in order to determine their precise meaning and scope. The verbal connections evoking the Macedonian king in Octavian Augustus’ titulary are interpreted here as an Egyptian example of the comparatio Alexandri, while those in the Egyptian names of the remaining emperors are evaluated within the framework of the imitatio (or comparatio) Augusti.

At one of these, Bir esh-Shaghala, these excavations have found several large mud-brick tombs which originally had pyramidal superstructures and subterranean burial chambers. The authors publish here, in advance of a full report on the site, the Greek and demotic texts found on and in two of the tombs.

A comprehensive overview of the names and their characteristics is provided, as well as an analysis of the context in which they appear. They were not limited to a 'purely' Egyptian milieu, suggesting an altogether more mixed society in Roman Egypt, as opposed to the Ptolemaic period.

On the basis of a new analysis of the so-called logeia-receipts we conclude that these documents do not refer to voluntary contributions to finance the construction of the temple, but are issued in connection with an official tax on priestly offices. The building of a first temple in Deir Shelwit may probably be dated to the end of the 30th dynasty or the Ptolemaic era, while a new sanctuary was constructed under Augustus. Another small Isis chapel, with its own cult servants, is attested in the Ptolemaic period to the north of the temples of Medinet Habu. The emergence of the Isis cult on the Theban West Bank is probably connected with the growing popularity of the cult of her brother Osiris, who according to the local tradition was buried in the “Mound of Djeme”.

The Earliest Paper Documents in the Vienna Collection Revisited
show More to view fulltext, buy and share links for:The Earliest Paper Documents in the Vienna Collection Revisited show Less to hide fulltext, buy and share links for: The Earliest Paper Documents in the Vienna Collection RevisitedAbstractIn the context of the transition from papyrus to paper in Egypt in the 3rd to 4th c. Hijra, Josef von Karabacek has claimed that the Vienna collection hosts some of the very early paper documents, stemming already from the 2nd or early 3rd c. Hijra. However, in this two seminal publications (on Arabic paper in 1887 and in his catalogue of the Vienna collection in 1893) no plates are given. For this article, the early Arabic paper documents as listed by Karabacek have been located in the Vienna collection and been examined as regards their dating. It will be shown that most of the very early documents are most probably much older.
