Stunde/oberes RegisterBy: Stefan BojowaldAbstractThe present article seeks a new understanding of the Egyptian word “ỉśḳ” from the 7th hour / upper register of the “Amduat”. The explanation as a secondary form of “ḥśḳ” “to cut” is offered as a solution. The basis is the well-known exchange of “ỉ” and “ḥ” because of the similarity of the signs in the Hieratic. The interpretation is backed up by a parallel.

Although they have long been acknowledged as a common feature in Ptolemaic hieroglyphic texts, the phenomenon has not been investigated in depth. This article offers an examination of sound devices in the texts of Ptolemaic and Roman temples, providing a typology for the phenomenon, and an analysis of its linguistic techniques and its various functions.

The author re-analyses the sources mentioning the toponym in question. As a result, he observes that Bia-Punt is not mentioned outside of the site of Mersa/Wadi Gawasis; moreover all attestations come from the 12th dynasty. This leads to a conclusion that Bia-Punt should be interpreted as the Egyptian name of the coastal region of the Red Sea within which the port of Mersa Gawasis was situated rather than as a name of a mining region within or in a vicinity of Punt as previously suggested by other scholars. This hypothesis seems to be corroborated by the testimony of the stela WG 05 dated to the reign of Amenemhat III.

- 1. Gand. Inv. 47). The letter is addressed to a certain Dioscorus, most probably Dioscorus of Aphrodite. The fragmentary status of the letter does not allow a full understanding of the text, but the formulary clearly shows a monastic context, in all likelihood the monastery of Apa Apollos founded by Dioscorus’ father in 537 CE. Since the senders address Dioscorus as their ‘brother’, it is likely that the letter belongs to the little-known last period of Dioscorus’ life, when he retired to his father’s monastery around 573 CE.
