Likely to vary according to the syntactic status and the illocutionary force of the clause, the value and distribution of these terms can also reflect the state of evolution of the language. In order to perceive the rhythm of this evolution, we will compare, for the terms listed in the Liber, their use in the Historiae, a much more extensive work of largely similar style and content, written towards the end of the sixth century by Gregory of Tours. Will evolution turn out to be straight or will it involve discontinuities?
