Variazione lessicale e linguaggio notarile. Qualche esempio dalle carte mediolatine della Campania (IX-XII secolo)

Preview this chapter:

Linguistic analysis of medieval notarial documents requires scholars to consider a number of complex and interwoven factors. In this paper, we observe such complexity in the charters of early medieval Campania, focusing on the lexicon of the inventories of everyday objects. It is generally assumed that these sections of the documents reflect features of everyday language. On the other hand, we will point out that scribes tended to repeat similar patterns when listing daily life objects. Documents from areas with different political and cultural backgrounds show lexical variation in the naming of the same objects. We will consider various possible explanations for these peculiarities, taking into account the main issues of lexical analysis.
